Faith leads to hope.
Psalm 27 is divided into three parts: (1-6) The Psalmist’s Faith, (7-12) his Desire Towards God and (13-14) his Expectation from God. The Psalmist goes through three emotional changes: from a confident declaration of trust in the Lord, to a complete reversal of mindset; utter despair; an anxious plea to the Lord not to forget his agony, to a firm reassurance.
Where does this reassurance come from and how does it develop?
The piece takes place within a state of “conflict†or a “time of dangerâ€. Therefore, at the beginning of the dance, every individual on stage is battling some sort of problem. They are within close proximity, yet cannot relate with one another due to their pressing anxieties. Their focus is internal; they are alone.
As the dance progresses, however, the individuals find themselves in situations that force them to acknowledge one another and the gifts each has to offer. Notice how they start to work together within the movement. This communication helps to establish the strength and confidence of which Psalm 27 speaks. As a society, how often do we dwell on our own individual needs or desires and forget the community around us? What limits do we place upon ourselves? How does prejudice and judgment trap our minds from the possibilities of new connections? Why should we seek to understand and learn to accept others for who they are? It is an awakening. In closing, the dancers and musicians together, proclaim a vibrant declaration of confidence; resounding in adoration and praise.
The Lord is My Light, the finale number to this vignette, was sung at the closing of a mass one-day at my parish; I knew instantly that it had to be a dance. From initial inspiration, to curtain call, it was an endeavor three years in the making.
To create a ‘seamless continuity’ between all artistic elements.
